Exciting news for pet owners in the UK! Meatly, a London startup, has launched “Chick Bites,” the first pet treats made from cultivated meat. These treats combine cultivated chicken with plant-based ingredients, appealing to those who want a healthier, more sustainable option for their furry friends.
Priced at £3.49 ($4.30 USD) for 50 grams, these samples are currently available at a Pets at Home store in London. This limited release marks a significant step as Meatly collaborates with The Pack, a plant-based dog food brand. Both Pets at Home and Agronomics, a prominent UK investor in cultivated meat, support Meatly’s mission.
Meatly made headlines last year by becoming the first company to receive regulatory approval for using cultivated meat in pet food. Founding CEO Owen Ensor expressed his enthusiasm, stating this launch is a major leap towards healthier and more eco-friendly pet food options. He noted that just two years ago, producing cultivated meat for pets seemed like an ambitious dream.
Pets at Home is also thrilled to be part of this innovation. COO Anja Madsen highlighted that this development could significantly lessen the environmental impact of pet food, offering new possibilities for the industry.
With Chick Bites on the shelves, Pets at Home is now the first retailer to sell cultivated meat pet food. Looking ahead, Meatly plans to secure more funding to scale up production and expand availability in the next few years, continuing its partnership with The Pack and Pets at Home.
It’s important to know that currently, 20% of global meat is used for pet food. Traditional meat production demands a substantial amount of land and water. In contrast, cultivated meat uses far less, making it a more sustainable choice. Not only does it require only a small fraction of land and water, but it is also free from antibiotics and hormones.
Meatly Chicken is created from a single chicken egg cell, nurtured over a week with a blended mix of nutrients to produce meat that resembles chicken pâté in texture. According to Meatly, this technique could provide a continuous supply of cultivated meat for pets without needing more animal cells.
Damien Clarkson, CEO of The Pack, noted that this product launch is a pivotal moment for the pet food market. With cultivated meat, there’s a chance to reduce or even eliminate the dependence on farmed animals for pet food.
