U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently announced that a Navy supply ship, previously named after LGBTQ+ rights activist Harvey Milk, will now bear the name of Oscar V. Peterson. Peterson was a chief petty officer who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during World War II, particularly at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Hegseth stated, “We are taking the politics out of ship naming.” The shift comes amid ongoing discussions about LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S., particularly following recent policies from the previous administration that many viewed as discriminatory.

Harvey Milk, known for being one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., served as a city supervisor in San Francisco before his tragic murder in 1978. His legacy is significant, as he fought passionately for LGBTQ+ rights, becoming a symbol of hope for many. The ship was named after him in 2016 by former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who aimed to honor leaders in civil rights.

Oscar Peterson’s actions during the war are remarkable. He served aboard the USS Neosho, which was heavily attacked by Japanese forces in May 1942. Despite suffering severe injuries, Peterson displayed extraordinary courage, managing to keep the ship operational by closing vital steam valves. His heroism saved lives and showcased the resilience of those who serve.

The announcement to rename the ship coincides with the start of Pride Month, a time when many celebrate LGBTQ+ achievements and draw attention to ongoing struggles for equality.
