An exciting collaboration is brewing in the world of sustainable fashion. VML, Lab-Grown Leather Ltd., and The Organoid Company have joined forces to create the first-ever T-Rex leather. This unique material blends genomic engineering with advanced tissue technology.

The aim is to craft a cruelty-free leather by using reconstructed DNA from the Tyrannosaurus Rex. This marks a groundbreaking move for luxury goods, marrying innovation with sustainability.

The partnership leverages VML Netherlands’ creative vision, The Organoid Company’s expertise in genome engineering, and Lab-Grown Leather’s specialized Advanced Tissue Engineering Platform (ATEP™). Together, they’re set to create a next-generation leather that could reshape the industry.

Instead of relying on traditional plant or synthetic materials, the method focuses on cultivating real biological structures. This results in a product that is genetically akin to genuine leather.

Learning from the Past

The science behind this project is captivating. Researchers are utilizing fossilized collagen from T-Rex remains, dating back 80 million years, as a blueprint. By engineering cells with synthetic DNA, they integrate these into Lab-Grown Leather’s product development, creating authentic skin structures.

This innovative “scaffold-free” tissue engineering allows cells to form their own networks, producing leather-like material that mirrors real properties. Dinosaurs evolved to endure harsh environments, a trait that scientists believe offers insights as we face modern climate challenges.

According to Professor Che Connon from Lab-Grown Leather, “This venture demonstrates the potential of cell-based technology to create materials that are both innovative and ethically responsible.”

Positive Environmental Impact

This revolutionary leather alternative aims to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of traditional leather manufacturing. Conventional methods often lead to deforestation and use harmful chemicals, causing soil and water pollution.

In contrast, T-Rex leather offers an eco-friendly solution. It’s biodegradable and maintains durability, appeal, and texture that luxury consumers seek. This project aligns with a growing trend where consumers demand sustainability alongside quality in their purchases.

Unlike plant-based or synthetic leathers, Elemental Leather™ is crafted from animal cells, ensuring a natural form without additional scaffolding. Companies claim this makes the material “true leather,” free from additives that compromise authenticity.

Initially, T-Rex leather will be used for luxury accessories, with a flagship item expected by the end of 2025. The partners plan to expand its use beyond fashion into markets like automotive and smart textiles.

The global leather market is projected to hit $780 billion by 2035, with bio-based materials growing at an impressive rate of 10-15% annually. This opens up vast opportunities for T-Rex leather.
