Investigation Unfolds: Shaolin Temple Leader Accused of Embezzling Funds

China’s renowned Shaolin Temple has put its abbot, Shi Yongxin, under investigation for serious allegations, including embezzlement and misusing temple funds. This revelation came from a notice released on the temple’s WeChat account.

Shi is accused of not only financial misconduct but also violating Buddhist morals, including having relationships with several women and fathering at least one child. The investigation involves multiple departments, and results will be shared soon.

The Shaolin Temple, located in Henan province, is famous not just as a religious site but also as a hub of martial arts. It’s appeared in numerous films, including the iconic 1982 movie “The Shaolin Temple,” starring Jet Li.

Interestingly, Shi has faced similar accusations before. In 2016, he was cleared of claims suggesting he fathered multiple children and took money from the temple, according to reports from Caixin Global.

Shi Yongxin joined the Shaolin Temple in 1981 and became its abbot in 1999. Over the years, he’s gained a reputation as a “CEO monk,” which has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some critics argue that his commercial ventures, which included promoting kung fu shows and merchandise, undermine the temple’s spiritual values.

Recently, local media dismissed an online rumor that Shi attempted to flee to the U.S. with numerous mistresses and up to 20 children, calling it fake news.
