DES Moines, Iowa — This week, Iowa Senate Republicans approved a 2% increase in funding for public schools. This decision allocates a total of $4.2 billion for K-12 education.
The bill also supports the state’s Education Savings Accounts, which help cover private school tuition with public funds. Additionally, this funding includes the second phase of a pay raise for teachers.
However, Senate Democrats believe this increase is too low. They proposed a bigger boost of 5%, but that suggestion did not pass. State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott raised concerns, saying, “With just 2%, 159 school districts may need to cut teachers or increase property taxes.” She highlighted the tough choices schools face.
On the other hand, Senate Republicans argue that they must keep spending within the state’s budget limits. They point out that tax cuts have led to a decrease in available funds, making a 2% increase more manageable.
In the House, Republicans are considering a slightly larger increase of 2.25%. They are also looking at extra funds for transportation and shared operational costs. Before any proposal can become law, both sides will need to come to an agreement on the final funding numbers.
