Ames, Iowa – T.J. Otzelberger is staying put as the head coach of the Iowa State men’s basketball team. After leading the Cyclones to three Sweet 16 appearances in five years, he signed a new contract that extends his role until June 30, 2036. His salary will rise to $6 million annually.
Jamie Pollard, Iowa State’s Athletics Director, praised Otzelberger for transforming the team into a consistent NCAA Tournament contender. He emphasized that this contract shows the university’s commitment to the program and its future.
In the 2025-26 season, the Cyclones had an impressive 29-8 record, marking one of their best performances ever. They ended the season ranked No. 8 in the final AP Top 25 Poll, underscoring a streak of 52 consecutive weeks in the rankings. That’s one of the longest streaks in the country.
Under Otzelberger’s leadership, the team hasn’t just thrived in basketball; it’s excelled academically as well. A record GPA of 3.39 for the fall 2025 semester highlights this success—it’s the seventh time in nine semesters that the team achieved a GPA above 3.00.
President David Cook noted Otzelberger’s deep commitment to the university and to shaping young athletes. His leadership has transformed the program’s culture, leading to both on-court achievements and personal growth for players.
When Otzelberger took charge on March 18, 2021, the team was coming off a tough 2-22 season. In just a few years, he has led the Cyclones to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and won the 2024 Big 12 Tournament title. His five-year record stands at 124 wins and 53 losses, with a notable 54 wins in conference play.
Otzelberger has also made a name for himself with 30 victories over AP Top 25 teams, more than any coach in Iowa State’s history. This level of success places him alongside coaching legends like Johnny Orr and Fred Hoiberg, both of whom also guided teams to multiple 20-win seasons.
