The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) kicked off its Sixty-fourth Plenary Session in Bangkok, Thailand, on March 24, 2026. Nearly 300 delegates from various countries gathered to discuss important climate issues and the ongoing seventh assessment cycle.
One major topic on the agenda is the review of the Principles and Procedures that guide the IPCC’s work. These guidelines are updated every five years to ensure they stay relevant. During the session, IPCC Chair Jim Skea emphasized the importance of these principles for maintaining the Panel’s credibility and effectiveness in providing balanced and transparent climate assessments.
“The principles and procedures are essential for our ability to deliver comprehensive and scientifically robust assessments,” Skea said.
The four-day meeting will also cover various topics, including fundraising for the IPCC Trust Fund, updates on projects related to climate data support, and the consideration of new observer organizations. Additionally, the Panel will receive progress updates on the ongoing seventh assessment cycle, which started in July 2023 and aims to culminate in a significant Synthesis Report by 2029.
A noteworthy aspect of this cycle is the preparation of the seventh assessment report (AR7), which will incorporate contributions from three working groups. The IPCC also plans to produce specialized reports on climate change impacts in urban areas and important methodologies related to climate forcing and carbon management.
Delegates were welcomed by Raweewan Bhuridej, Thailand’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The session also featured virtual messages from leaders in climate action, emphasizing the global collaboration needed to tackle climate change.
In light of the recent data, a report from the World Meteorological Organization stated that greenhouse gas concentrations reached record levels in 2023. This stark statistic underscores the urgent need for comprehensive assessments and action to mitigate climate change effects.
