Wireless reverse charging is a feature many have been hoping for in iPhones. Apple began working on it years ago, even testing it out partially in the iPhone 12. Yet, it hasn’t been fully available in any iPhone model so far, unlike many Android devices that already offer this capability.

Reports suggest Apple is currently testing this feature in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro. It’s said that the goal is to create a more advanced version of reverse charging.

What is Wireless Reverse Charging?

This technology allows a smartphone to charge another device wirelessly. Imagine your iPhone powering up your AirPods or Apple Watch. While it might be nice to charge one iPhone with another, it’s really more practical for these smaller devices.

Many Android phones, including brands like Samsung and Xiaomi, already support this feature. However, the charging speed is usually slow, making it best for emergencies. If your accessory is running low and you’re away from a charger, reverse charging can be a lifesaver.

A Glimpse with the iPhone 12

The intrigue around Apple’s delay grows when recalling that the iPhone 12 actually had some of the necessary components for this feature. Although it could charge the MagSafe Battery Pack, it never released the full capabilities to charge AirPods or other devices.

Apple’s Ambitions

Back in 2023, sources revealed that Apple was aiming for a more refined version of reverse charging, initially hoping to launch it with the iPhone 14.

According to insiders, Apple is focusing on better control over charging speeds and efficiency. They are also planning a user-friendly interface for this feature, similar to what’s available with MagSafe accessories.

Testing for the iPhone 17 Pro

Now, rumors are that the reverse charging feature is being tested in the iPhone 17 Pro, with some reports mentioning it could charge at 7.5W. It’s still uncertain if this will be available for use right away.

Recent leaks have proven accurate before, hinting that Apple is getting closer to launching this feature.
