LONDON (AP) — Some iPhone owners may soon receive cash payments of up to $95 from Apple due to a recent $250 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit. This lawsuit stemmed from claims that Apple misled consumers about the AI capabilities of its Siri assistant when it launched the iPhone 16 in 2024, touting new features that never materialized.

The lawsuit was initiated in the federal court in San Francisco, alleging Apple deceived customers with a marketing campaign that promised features that weren’t ready. Buyers felt misled, suggesting they either wouldn’t have purchased the phones or would have paid much less if they had known the Siri upgrades were not available.

If a judge approves the settlement, it could mark one of Apple’s largest ever. It covers about 37 million iPhones sold in the U.S. between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro models. Each device owner may get a minimum of $25, potentially rising to $95 based on claim volume and other factors.

Customers will be notified via email or mail about how to file a claim through a dedicated settlement website. Apple stated the settlement aims to allow the company to focus on delivering innovative products rather than handling legal disputes.

In the competitive landscape of AI, Apple has been playing catch-up while rivals like Google and Samsung have made significant advancements. Despite the criticism, Apple asserts that it has introduced various AI features since launching “Apple Intelligence,” including Visual Intelligence and Live Translations.

Experts from the tech industry suggest that the controversy highlights the growing scrutiny of companies’ marketing practices, especially regarding new technologies. Recent surveys show that consumer trust in tech companies is waning, with 62% of respondents believing that brands often overpromise and underdeliver.

As Apple prepares for updates, including a revamped Siri, many users will be watching closely, eager to see how the company evolves in the fast-paced AI arena. While some may still be apprehensive after this experience, Apple’s next moves could reshape public perception and user loyalty.
