Iran and China Unite: Universities Sign MOU to Strengthen Scientific Collaborations

Tarbiat Modarres University in Tehran has teamed up with Shanghai University in a five-year agreement to boost scientific cooperation. This partnership, signed on July 29 by chancellors from both institutions, aims to enhance the exchange of students, professors, and researchers, as well as cooperative research initiatives.

This collaboration reflects a broader trend among Iranian universities to strengthen ties with Chinese and Russian institutions. During a meeting in April, Iranian and Chinese officials discussed several plans, including joint academic courses and increased scholarship opportunities. This effort is part of a 25-year comprehensive agreement signed in 2021 between Iran and China, aiming to deepen collaborative ties.

Recent data shows that in 2025, 34 Iranian universities made the Times Higher Education rankings for their commitment to sustainable development goals. This is a slight increase from the previous year. Among them, Alzahra University and Kerman University of Medical Sciences ranked between 401-600. The University of Tehran is also making its mark internationally, ranking 322nd in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2026.

Interestingly, Shahid Beheshti University boosted its ranking by 100 spots, showcasing the upward trajectory of Iranian higher education. These developments illustrate a renewed focus on research and global collaboration, aligning with experts’ views that fostering international partnerships is critical for academic growth and innovation.

Overall, these initiatives highlight Iran’s commitment to integrating its universities into the global academic community, emphasizing collaboration, sustainability, and development. This ongoing effort can make significant contributions to both research and international relations, ultimately benefiting not just academia but society as a whole.
