Iran Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Ties as India-Flagged LPG Tanker Navigates Strait of Hormuz

New Delhi: The India-flagged LPG tanker Green Sanvi has successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the seventh Indian vessel to make the journey during the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The tanker is carrying around 44,000 tonnes of LPG, enough to meet half a day’s demand in India.

Shipping experts suggest that more Indian LPG tankers, Green Asha and Jag Vikram, will follow suit in the coming days. Despite the tensions in the region, 17 India-flagged ships are currently operating east of the Strait. This mix includes LPG tankers, crude oil carriers, and bulk carriers, highlighting India’s strong presence in the Persian Gulf.

The Iranian Consulate in Mumbai recently responded to a post from Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, emphasizing the historical ties between India and Iran. The Consulate expressed its commitment to strengthening this friendship, which dates back centuries.

To ensure safe passage for its vessels, India is maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Iran. The Iranian government has allowed non-hostile vessels linked to countries like India and China to transit through the strait, despite broader restrictions due to the conflict. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed that friendly nations can navigate the crucial waterway with coordination.

The Strait of Hormuz is essential for global energy transportation. Keeping this route secure is vital, particularly as geopolitical tensions rise. The journey of the Green Sanvi underlines India’s efforts to maintain energy supply lines and emphasizes the role of diplomacy and maritime safety in global trade.

Notably, the recent increase in maritime traffic through the Strait reflects a broader trend. According to recent reports, nearly 20% of the world’s oil passes through this narrow waterway, making it a strategic point of interest for many nations. The successful transit of these vessels speaks to the importance of international cooperation in maintaining open trade routes.
