At the recent 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, Iran’s Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment, Shina Ansari, emphasized the urgent need for global collaboration to tackle the climate crisis. She assured that Iran is dedicated to its climate commitments, even with ongoing sanctions.
While thanking Brazil for hosting the conference, Ansari described it as a key moment for nations to make fair and actionable decisions on environmental issues. She pointed out that all member states of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) must work to lower greenhouse gas emissions and shift to renewable energy.
Despite challenges imposed by unilateral sanctions, Iran has made notable strides in clean energy. Ansari reported a 75% increase in solar energy capacity over the past year and a significant boost in wind power. By managing gas flaring at oil and gas fields, they have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 billion cubic meters.
Ansari also shared that Iran’s energy projects are ongoing. Despite facing prolonged droughts and a rising national temperature, the country remains committed to sustainability.
Interestingly, recent data from the Global Climate Report shows that average global temperatures have increased by about 1.2°C since the late 19th century. This change demands urgent action worldwide.
During her speech, Ansari condemned recent military actions by the U.S. and Israel as illegal, noting their severe environmental impacts, including the release of greenhouse gases in Tehran. She also mentioned the humanitarian and environmental crisis in Gaza, urging global awareness and cooperation.
Closing her remarks, Ansari highlighted Iran’s willingness to share its knowledge to help other countries reach their environmental goals, asserting that we all share one planet and must act justly for future generations.
COP30 runs from November 10 to 21, 2025, making history by taking place in the Amazon region. This year’s theme emphasizes sustainable development and climate action with the involvement of global leaders, aiming to foster cooperation and technological exchange.
