Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated that Iran sees no reason to engage in talks with the U.S. President Trump claims Iran is eager to negotiate to end the ongoing conflict. However, Araghchi clarified, “We never asked for a ceasefire, and we have never asked even for negotiation.”
As the conflict drags on, Trump has suggested that Iran is on the brink of defeat and seeking a deal that he finds unacceptable. In his post on Truth Social, he remarked, “Iran is totally defeated and wants a deal – But not a deal that I would accept!” He further emphasized to NBC News that the terms must improve before he considers a negotiation.
Contrary to the President’s claims, Araghchi asserted that Iran is committed to defending itself. “We are prepared to continue this defense until President Trump realizes this is an illegal war,” he said. He criticized the U.S. actions, describing them as a “war of choice” driven by Trump’s desires rather than necessity.
Araghchi dismissed the notion that this conflict threatens the Iranian government’s survival. “We are stable and strong enough,” he noted, emphasizing the lack of incentive to negotiate while the U.S. has engaged in military actions. “There is no good experience talking with the Americans,” he added.
In the lead-up to the current strikes, Trump’s team, including Jared Kushner, had already been in talks with Iran. During these discussions, Iran proposed diluting its enriched uranium, a significant offer aimed at demonstrating its long-standing commitment to avoiding nuclear weapons. However, when asked if that offer still stands, Araghchi made it clear: “There is nothing on the table right now.”
Overall, the situation remains tense, with no clear path forward for dialogue. Experts suggest that without mutual understanding and a willingness to address underlying issues, peace negotiations could face significant hurdles.
