In October 2024, the GCF approved its first project in Iraq, providing $39 million for “Strengthening Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Agriculture Livelihoods.” This project aims to help transform the agricultural sector, which is crucial for the country’s food security.

Dr. Hallo Al Askari, Iraq’s Minister of Environment, stated that the main goal of the Country Programme is to implement Iraq’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These contributions outline strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors, including energy, industry, and transportation. They also focus on adapting to climate change impacts, particularly in agriculture and water resources.

Henry Gonzalez, Chief Investment Officer at the GCF, praised Iraq’s initiative. He mentioned that the GCF is dedicated to supporting the country as it enhances its climate efforts. The GCF team is currently collaborating with the Iraqi government to turn strategic visions into actionable projects, particularly in agriculture and water.

Building on the initial agriculture project, the GCF is helping Iraq create effective proposals that align with its NDCs. This collaboration could significantly improve the lives of two million vulnerable citizens and bolster the nation’s food security.

Climate risks in Iraq are rising, with soaring temperatures, lengthy droughts, and diminishing water supplies from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. These issues are exacerbated by poor water management and soil salinity, which critically affect agricultural output. Farmers, reliant on irrigation, face immense challenges as they struggle to adapt.

Recent data shows that global temperatures are expected to rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2024, making the need for climate action even more urgent. With this in mind, Iraq’s initiatives represent a crucial step toward resilience and sustainability in a rapidly changing environment.
