The Iredell Community Outreach Association, known as COAST, is shaking things up. They announced changes to their services this week. For the past five years, COAST has been a valuable resource, offering affordable goods to the community.

Despite rising prices due to inflation, COAST has worked hard to keep everyday items and household necessities accessible at discount prices. They’ve also been known for their free food and clothing programs. Unfortunately, keeping the food pantry running has been a struggle. COAST is self-funded and has not received federal grants, relying mainly on sales from their variety store to support the pantry.

Due to funding challenges and the presence of at least ten partner agencies in Iredell County that provide food assistance, COAST has made the tough choice to close its food pantry. Instead, they will focus on supplying clothing and household essentials, while directing those in need to partner agencies for food support.

Starting February 10, COAST will offer free clothing and household items on an individual basis. Current clients with unused outreach vouchers can still use them for food and clothing, but no new food vouchers will be issued.

Those wanting to receive free clothing or essentials can request an application from the cashier or staff. Eligibility is determined quickly, and there are no income restrictions. Simply provide an ID, your birthday, and Social Security numbers for all household members.

COAST remains committed to meeting community needs and will adjust their outreach programs accordingly. They will continue to support annual initiatives, like the back-to-school drive and their Community Christmas Program, which sponsors meals and gifts for local children.
