A mysterious ‘hot blob’ is on the move, headed towards New York City. Recently published research in the journal Geology reveals that UK scientists found this massive blob of rock lurking beneath the Appalachian mountains, puzzling many experts.
What is this ‘hot blob’?
Formally known as the Northern Appalachian Anomaly (NAA), this blob lies approximately 125 feet underground and stretches 220 miles across New England. Initially thought to be 180 million years old—dating back to when North America split from Africa—new findings suggest it might actually have formed around 80 million years ago. This was when the landmasses destined to become Canada and Greenland began to part ways, according to the research.
Tom Gernon, a Professor of Earth Science at the University of Southampton, points out that the blob is located in a part of the continent that hasn’t changed much for 180 million years. He said, “The idea that it was just a leftover from the landmass breaking apart never really fit.”
How is it formed?
The blob is created by molten material from the Earth’s mantle rising through cracks in the crust, a process Gernon describes as “mantle waves.” When this hot rock cools, it can create a ripple effect, which affects the land above it.
Scientists replicated this blob’s formation 1,120 miles northeast of the Appalachians using geological observations and computer models. They found that the blob moves at a rate of 12 miles every million years. At this pace, it could reach New York City in about 10 to 15 million years.
Implications of the ‘hot blob’
Interestingly, this blob may have played a role in uplifting the Appalachian mountains. Gernon mentions that the heat from the blob could weaken the continent’s dense roots, making it lighter. This process is similar to how a hot air balloon rises when it releases weight.
Moreover, there’s a possibility that this blob contributes to rare volcanic eruptions, helping bring diamonds closer to the surface.
Recent Reactions
The scientific community is buzzing about these findings. On social media, discussions have ranged from curiosity to concern over what this blob means for future geological events.
The blob’s movements and its effects on local geology are significant. Not only does this insight reveal how our planet evolves, but it also showcases the intriguing connection between the past and present.
