This isn’t the end for Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis, even if it feels that way right now. Colts general manager Chris Ballard has consistently expressed patience with the young quarterback. After Richardson’s season-ending shoulder injury early in his rookie year and a midseason benching in favor of Joe Flacco, Ballard has always stood by his choice of selecting Richardson as the No. 4 pick in 2023.
However, the situation shifted recently when Colts coach Shane Steichen declared Daniel Jones the starting quarterback. Steichen emphasized the need to focus on immediate results for the team in 2025, stating, “I’ve got to make these decisions. That’s what I get paid to do.” Choosing Jones might seem safer, but it raises questions about Richardson’s future with the franchise.
Richardson has faced multiple challenges, including 17 missed games over the past two seasons due to injuries. Ballard noted that Richardson’s health issues were a major factor in bringing Jones into the competition, which suggests the Colts might see Richardson as unreliable. This decision has led some to believe that the Colts might be giving up on Richardson too soon, especially since he has yet to establish his footing as a starting quarterback.
Even with all his ups and downs, Richardson still needs game experience to grow. Steichen believes that sitting on the bench could offer Richardson a chance to learn. However, for someone in a critical development stage, being sidelined doesn’t help much. Richardson himself seems torn, expressing faith in God while sidestepping questions about his future with the team.
His agent, Deiric Jackson, voiced concerns about the trust between Richardson and the Colts. “Trust is a big factor, and that is, at best, questionable right now,” he stated while addressing Richardson’s uncertain role moving forward.
Looking back historically, several quarterbacks taken within the top five have found themselves benched, but few have later blossomed into stars with the same team. It’s a hard path to navigate, especially when expectations are high. Ballard admitted that perhaps they rushed Richardson into play too soon, leaving him unprepared.
Interestingly, Daniel Jones, who now takes over, has had his own struggles. He has only played one full season without missing games and carries a less-than-stellar record of 24-44-1 over his time in New York. His best season, leading the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, stands out against a backdrop of inconsistency. Steichen believes in his abilities but questions remain if he can deliver the wins the Colts need.
As the Colts place their bets on Jones, they risk losing faith in Richardson. It’s a gamble, and it’s unclear if this decision will lead to playoff success.
