The president of Iran’s soccer federation, Mehdi Taj, expressed uncertainty about the national team’s ability to participate in the upcoming World Cup matches in the United States. The concern stems from recent attacks by the U.S. and Israel, which have heightened tensions in the region.
“We cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Taj told sports site Varzesh3, referring to the ongoing conflict that has escalated following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran’s team is set to compete in Group G. They have scheduled matches against New Zealand on June 15, Belgium on June 21, and Egypt on June 26, all in various locations across the U.S., which is co-hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Historical travel bans, such as the one introduced during the Trump administration, have previously restricted fans from Iran from entering the U.S.
FIFA has yet to respond to inquiries about Iran’s participation amidst these rising tensions. As we watch these events unfold, the outlook for Iran’s team and its fans remains uncertain.
