Jets coach Aaron Glenn is considering a quarterback change as they approach their game against the Ravens on November 23. When asked about benching Justin Fields, he said, “I’m evaluating everything.” This was quite different from his earlier comments, where he firmly defended Fields after a loss in London.
Recently, Glenn made the surprising move to bench Fields during the game against the Panthers, opting for backup Tyrod Taylor. Since then, he has avoided naming a starting quarterback leading into games against the Bengals, Browns, and now Ravens.
Fields has struggled, recording only 116 passing yards in the recent loss to the Patriots. After that game, he acknowledged, “Not good enough.” The Jets currently sit at the bottom of the league, averaging just 139.9 passing yards per game.
Glenn pointed out that both Fields and the receivers need to improve. Newly acquired wide receiver Adonai Mitchell dropped key passes, adding to the pressure on Fields. “There were some open guys that we missed,” Glenn noted, indicating that the blame isn’t solely on Fields.
This season has been tough for the Jets. After signing Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal, it’s unclear if he’ll even remain as the backup next season. The Jets might draft a quarterback, which adds to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Glenn has to make choices that help the team win, not just make a quick change for a temporary boost. He expressed frustration with the team’s missed opportunities, highlighting communication issues on defense that allowed Patriots quarterback Drake Maye to make big plays.
Strikingly, the Jets have achieved just one takeaway in their first ten games—an NFL record low. They’re also tied with the record for the most games without an interception to start a season. “To have one takeaway at this point is tough to imagine,” Glenn said. “We need to do better.”
