The International Space Station (ISS) might not see a space plane again. NASA’s space shuttle was crucial for building and operating the ISS for its first decade. However, as of now, Dream Chaser has not made it to space, and recent updates have changed its initial cargo deal. “After careful review, NASA and Sierra Space have decided to modify the contract due to the timing of Dream Chaser’s development,” officials said. Instead of flying to the ISS, the Dream Chaser will now conduct a free flight demonstration, set for late 2026. This shift means NASA is no longer tied to a specific number of resupply missions, although they may still order flights after the demonstration.
Time is running short for Dream Chaser’s potential ISS missions, especially since the ISS is scheduled for deorbit in 2030. Yet, NASA is promoting commercial space stations in low Earth orbit, where Dream Chaser might find new opportunities.
Sierra Space remains optimistic about Dream Chaser’s future. Fatih Ozmen, the executive chair, emphasized its versatility for various missions, ranging from commercial to national security tasks. As space innovations continue to evolve, he believes Dream Chaser can play a crucial role in addressing diverse mission needs.
Currently, SpaceX and Northrop Grumman manage robotic resupply missions to the ISS, using their Dragon capsules and Cygnus spacecraft, respectively. With the ISS set to conclude its mission, there is an urgent push for new solutions in space logistics and exploration.
