Philip Rivers recently shared his thoughts on coaching in the NFL, saying he feels ready, but isn’t actively pursuing it. “Take it one day at a time,” he reflected, recalling how quickly circumstances can change.
Despite his initial hesitations, teams are keen to know more about Rivers. With ten coaching vacancies this season—including five that are still open—his name has come up, leading to an interview with the Buffalo Bills.
Rivers stands out as a candidate, especially alongside a talented quarterback like Josh Allen. He has a proven track record of running offenses smoothly, even stepping in late last season and showing his leadership in an unfamiliar system.
It’s noteworthy that the last player to transition directly from the field to head coach in the NFL was Norm Van Brocklin in the 1960s. Van Brocklin ended his playing career with the Philadelphia Eagles and quickly became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. He remains one of just four players in NFL history to make such a leap.
Rivers isn’t the only one with potential. According to a recent survey, over 70% of NFL teams are now open to hiring coaches with playing experience. With the changing dynamics in football, this could mean more opportunities for former players like Rivers to step into coaching roles in the future.
Even if Rivers doesn’t land a coaching job this season, his willingness to explore options signals a serious interest in moving into a coaching role eventually. His name will likely remain in discussions for future seasons.
