The European Union wants to be a leader in climate and environmental protection. However, it still has a long way to go to reach its targets.

The EU Environment Agency (EEA) indicates that the EU is only partly on track to meet its climate and sustainability goals for 2030. While there has been progress in some areas, stronger actions are needed. This includes promoting a circular economy, protecting endangered species, and lowering the ecological footprint of consumption. The measures outlined in the EU Commission’s Green Deal need to be fully put into action.

A recent report from the EEA reviews the EU’s 8th Environmental Action Program (EAP) adopted in 2022. This program guides EU environmental policy until 2030. The report reveals that progress has been limited since 2023, compared to earlier assessments.

The report highlights some success in reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. There has also been a push for green financing. However, EEA Executive Director Leena Ylä-Mononen states that in other areas, action must be strengthened. Existing laws need to be enforced more effectively, and additional measures are essential for moving forward.
