There’s an intriguing object from another part of the universe making its way into our solar system. Named 3I-ATLAS, it’s the third interstellar object recognized by astronomers, and it’s creating quite a buzz since its discovery in early July.
Many scientists believe this object is an interstellar comet. However, some, like Avi Loeb from Harvard, think it could be a sign of advanced alien technology. Most of Loeb’s colleagues have dismissed this idea, but his theories continue to stir interest.
Currently, 3I-ATLAS is concealed behind the Sun, making it invisible from Earth for about a month. Loeb speculated that during this period, the object might perform some unexpected actions. Recent images from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands have given him more to ponder.
These images show a “tail” of debris that has shifted direction, now pointing toward the Sun. Astronomers term this an “anti-tail.” This phenomenon has been seen in other comets over the years. The apparent flip is due to how light and gravity interact, creating an optical illusion based on our perspective in space.
Loeb offers a different take, suggesting that this anti-tail might indicate the object is slowing down, possibly an alien craft. He argues that if it is indeed slowing down, the change from anti-tail to tail could signal purposeful maneuvering as it navigates our solar system.
“If the object is an alien spacecraft slowing down, the anti-tail would represent a braking action,” Loeb explained. He refers to a theory from his colleague, Adam Hibberd, about the object aiming for a stable orbit between Mars and Jupiter.
For now, we have to wait. The object is set to reappear around December 19, when its trajectory will be clearer. Will it show signs of a braking maneuver or continue its path as a simple comet? Only time will tell.
Interestingly, this kind of curiosity isn’t limited to 3I-ATLAS. A recent survey indicated that around 75% of Americans believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life, according to a Pew Research study. This openness to the possibility of alien life shapes how society views discoveries like 3I-ATLAS.
