Is the North Okanagan Landfill Approaching Full Capacity? What It Means for Local Residents

The Armstrong/Spallumcheen Diversion and Disposal Facility (ASDDF) is nearly at full capacity. This means there are now limitations on what can be disposed of at this site. The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has issued a warning to customers about these restrictions.

According to the RDNO, “The landfill is nearing its capacity, and space for various materials is increasingly limited." To manage this issue and ensure continued access, the RDNO is asking those with large or multiple loads to use the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility (GVDDF) instead.

Staff at ASDDF may direct customers bringing larger items to the other facility. The types of items that might be redirected include:

  • Yard and garden waste
  • Mattresses and sofas
  • Major appliances (like refrigerators and washers)
  • Regular refuse
  • Asphalt roofing
  • Wood waste
  • Drywall
  • Scrap metal
  • Logs and stumps
  • Construction debris

Dale Danallanko, RDNO manager of environmental services, emphasized the importance of these changes. He said, “Redirecting large loads to the GVDDF will help keep ASDDF open to serve as many customers as possible while we upgrade the residential transfer station.”

In recent years, landfill usage has increased. According to a 2023 study by the Environmental Protection Agency, the volume of waste has risen by nearly 15% in the last decade. This trend puts more pressure on local facilities like ASDDF.

The RDNO is determined to keep services running smoothly and appreciates customers’ understanding during this time. For more details, you can reach the RDNO Solid Waste Management team at their email or visit their website for further information.

As communities like Armstrong and Spallumcheen deal with similar issues, it becomes essential to find sustainable waste management solutions. With the construction of upgraded facilities, the region aims to improve its capacity and efficiency, ensuring better service for all residents.
