A few months later, I settled into my dorm, excited to start classes. My neighbors were a mix. One was from Minneapolis, and the other came from a farm just 20 miles away. As someone raised in Minnesota farm country, I felt right in the middle of both worlds.
We quickly became good friends. I eventually became a lawyer, one neighbor is now a food science researcher, and the other took his UMM experience back to his farm, using what he learned to improve his practices.
Our story is pretty common. For years, students have flocked to UMM from small towns, farms, and cities nearby. It’s a place where many of us figured out who we are and what we want to do. UMM sets us up for future success.
Since it opened over 60 years ago, the University of Minnesota Morris, nestled in a small town of just over 5,000, has been a key player in liberal arts education. Many graduates go on to careers in science, while others return to their hometowns, enriching their communities with new skills and knowledge.
UMM also shines as a center for Native American students and leads the way in developing sustainable farming and energy practices in west central Minnesota. It collaborates with the city of Morris to offer cultural, recreational, and economic opportunities for everyone in the area.
Recent studies show that universities like UMM significantly boost local economies. A report from the U.S. Department of Education highlighted that universities contribute over $800 billion to the national economy.
In a time when education is more crucial than ever, UMM’s commitment to community development and student growth is impressive. It’s more than a school; it’s a place that shapes futures and strengthens communities.
