How much will it cost to renovate the Boeing 747-8 given by Qatar to become the next Air Force One? That remains a secret. However, a recent $934 million transfer to a Pentagon budget might provide some hints.

The New York Times reported that this transfer likely funds the upgrades needed to transform the plane into a luxurious flying office for President Trump. Some funds may even come from a budget aimed at updating America’s nuclear missiles.

Interestingly, Trump will only use the plane as president for a short while. After his term, it’s expected to go to his presidential library in 2029, assuming he doesn’t extend his time in office—something he has playfully hinted at but would be unconstitutional.

The renovations include better communication systems, upgraded engines, and high-tech antimissile systems. Additionally, U.S. intelligence must ensure any hidden listening devices from Qatar are removed. The interior will feature decorations similar to those in the Oval Office, which Trump has styled with gold accents.

Trump sought this plane because Boeing has been delayed in delivering two new Air Force Ones, a project currently costing $4 billion.

Air Force Secretary Troy E. Meink recently discussed the estimated renovation costs with Congress. He mentioned, “A figure of around $1 billion has been mentioned, but many of those costs would happen eventually. We will just experience them sooner.” He believes the actual retrofit might be less than $400 million.

However, experts are skeptical about this estimate. Some engineers and congressional members worry that Trump might hasten the project, potentially compromising safety to get the plane into service sooner.

While the Pentagon is open about its nuclear modernization budget, it hasn’t disclosed the cost for the plane upgrades.

Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen expressed her concerns, stating, “The security implications of accepting a private plane from a foreign nation as Air Force One and the ethical issues surrounding such a gift are significant.” She worries that diverting funds from critical security projects to renovate this plane weakens U.S. credibility.
