There’s talk that President Trump and Elon Musk could end a significant piece of Kansas history—the Food for Peace program. This initiative, part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has worked for 70 years to combat world hunger using surplus U.S. agriculture.
Recently, reports suggest that the Food for Peace website and the entire USAID site have gone dark, which has raised alarms. During a press conference in Topeka, Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas expressed concerns about USAID. He mentioned that while he wants to ensure efficient foreign aid, he believes there’s been misuse of funds. Marshall stated, “I want it to be efficient, and I don’t want the thugs stealing the food and stealing the money as well.” He called for a pause on foreign aid spending, insisting that resources should first address domestic needs.
Musk has not held back in his criticism of USAID. He referred to it as “beyond repair” and even described it as a “criminal organization.” He made comments about “feeding USAID into the wood chipper,” indicating a desire for a complete overhaul or elimination of the agency.
The Food for Peace program started in the 1950s, championed by Kansas farmer Peter O’Brien and Kansas Senator Andy Schoeppel. It was created to manage surplus crops and provide assistance to countries with starving populations. Over the years, it has fed over 4 billion people across 150 countries. It ties Kansas farmers to a rich legacy of international aid, particularly when global events cause hunger crises, like wars or natural disasters.
U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann from Kansas celebrated Food for Peace’s legacy, highlighting its importance amidst a growing hunger crisis fueled by events in Ukraine, Israel, and Yemen. He noted that the program is crucial for maintaining international food stability.
Historically, Kansas has played a crucial role in foreign aid discussions. Senators and Representatives have often supported initiatives that provide food and aid to developing nations, recognizing that stability abroad can lead to peace and security at home.
Political science experts have commented on these proposed changes, noting the potential risks. Bob Beatty, a political science professor, pointed out that many in Congress seem willing to cede power to the president, raising questions about the balance of authority that was designed to prevent significant shifts in policy without broad consensus.
As these developments unfold, many are left wondering if the actions of Trump and Musk will indeed alter the future of foreign aid and Kansas’ proud contributions to it. Only time will tell how this will affect international relations and humanitarian efforts globally.
