Is Your Cinnamon Safe? Discover Which 16 Brands May Contain Harmful Lead, According to the FDA

Certain brands of cinnamon, a staple in many kitchens, have raised health concerns recently. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just flagged four more brands for having high levels of lead. In total, 16 cinnamon labels are now under scrutiny due to safety risks.

The brands in question include HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife. The FDA warns that prolonged exposure to these products could lead to harmful lead levels in the blood. They’ve asked most companies to recall their products, and so far, 10 brands have complied.

If you have any of the affected brands at home, it’s best to dispose of them right away.

Brands with Elevated Lead Levels

The FDA found these brands contain high lead levels ranging between 2.03 to 7.68 parts per million (ppm):

  • Roshni (2.268 ppm)
  • HAETAE (4.60 ppm)
  • Durra (2.44 ppm)
  • Wise Wife (2.49 ppm)
  • Jiva Organics (2.29 ppm)
  • Super Brand (up to 7.68 ppm)
  • Asli (2.32 ppm)
  • El Chilar (3.75 ppm)
  • Marcum (2.14 ppm)
  • SWAD (2.89 ppm)
  • Supreme Tradition (2.37 ppm)
  • Compania Indillor Orientale (2.23 ppm)
  • ALB Flavor (3.93 ppm)
  • Shahzada (2.03 ppm)
  • Spice Class (2.04 ppm)
  • La Frontera (2.66 ppm)

Why is This Happening?

Lead has a history of contaminating cinnamon, often getting into the spice through soil, processing equipment, or packaging, according to food policy expert Brian Ronholm. “Cinnamon grows from tree bark, which can absorb lead from contaminated soil,” he explains.

In 2023, the FDA began investigating a recent cinnamon contamination case linked to applesauce pouches that harmed children. The agencies monitor lead levels in food products, and this ongoing scrutiny, despite financial uncertainties, is crucial for public health.

The Health Risks of Lead

There is no safe level of lead exposure. For young children, even low levels can cause serious issues like learning difficulties and behavioral problems. According to the World Health Organization, adults may face long-term health issues, including high blood pressure and kidney damage.

Keeping our food safe is essential. With continued monitoring and proactive measures from agencies like the FDA, we can reduce risks and protect our health. For more detailed information on lead and food safety, check out the World Health Organization’s insights.
