JERUSALEM (AP) — Recently, Israel stated that the remains of three individuals handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross in Gaza are not those of any hostages. This setback further complicates the fragile ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
This exchange followed Israel’s return of 30 Palestinian bodies to Gaza. Earlier, Hamas had provided the remains of two hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the recent remains do not correspond to any known hostages, leaving their identities a mystery. Hamas claimed it wanted to expedite the process by offering samples of unidentified bodies, but Israel asked for the actual remains instead.
Since the ceasefire began on October 10, Palestinian militants have returned the remains of 17 hostages, while 11 remain in Gaza. While progress has been slow, Hamas attributed this to the devastation across Gaza and the ongoing Israeli military presence.
Israel is exchanging the unidentified remains of Palestinians for those of Israeli hostages. So far, it has returned 225 Palestinian bodies, but only 75 have been confirmed by families. The origins of these remains — whether from the conflict, custody, or recovery operations — remain unclear.
Tensions escalated recently when Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in over 100 fatalities. This raised alarms about the ceasefire’s stability. Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, emphasized that Israel’s military presence poses significant risks to the agreement. He suggested that a Palestinian police force, backed by international stabilization efforts, is essential for lasting peace.
The U.S. peace plan includes options for a temporary international force to support stability, but discussions on troop commitments are ongoing. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has expressed interest in contributing troops, contingent upon a United Nations mandate.
The current conflict, the deadliest in the region’s history, began with a Hamas-led attack that left around 1,200 dead and took 251 hostages. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israeli military actions have caused over 68,600 Palestinian deaths, a figure disputed by Israeli officials, who deny accusations of genocide without providing a counter-toll.
The ongoing situation is complex, marked by a cycle of violence and attempts at negotiation. With so many factors at play, the path toward peace remains uncertain, as both sides grapple with loss and the hope for resolution.
