Late Monday, Israel’s air force targeted Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, particularly in the Bekaa Valley. This move came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to escalate attacks on the militant group.
Netanyahu’s statement follows recent incidents where Hezbollah has deployed fiber optic drones against Israeli forces. He remarked, “We will strike back. We have a special team to tackle their drone attacks, and we will intensify our efforts.” His words highlighted Israel’s intention to respond firmly to these provocations.
In response to Netanyahu’s threats, some locals began evacuating the southern suburbs of Beirut, known for Hezbollah’s significant presence. Reports indicated multiple airstrikes hit the town of Mashghara that same night.
On the same day, Hezbollah launched eight attacks, including a drone strike on Israeli troops in Misgav Am, northern Israel. Tensions remain high, as these exchanges continue despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire established on April 17.
A U.S. State Department official noted that Hezbollah has disregarded numerous requests to cease fire, with ongoing attacks undermining diplomatic efforts. Over a thousand drones and more than 700 rockets have been fired by Hezbollah since the ceasefire began, indicating a deteriorating situation.
Recent talks between Lebanon and Israel were the first direct discussions in over thirty years, held in Washington. Israeli and U.S. officials aim to disarm Hezbollah, seeing this ceasefire as a potential challenge to the group’s narrative of resistance. A well-executed ceasefire could diminish Hezbollah’s influence in the region.
Tragically, the conflict has taken a heavy toll. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports over 3,000 deaths in Lebanon, alongside casualties in Israel, including soldiers and civilians. For context, the current Israel-Hezbollah war began on March 2, following Hezbollah’s rocket fire into northern Israel just after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
