Israel has announced the death of Saeed Izadi, an Iranian commander linked to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The strike occurred early Saturday in Qom, Iran, targeting an apartment where Izadi was staying.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated Izadi played a significant role in planning the attack that resulted in about 1,200 Israeli deaths and numerous hostages being taken to Gaza. IDF chief Eyal Zamir described this as a crucial achievement, stating, “The blood of thousands of Israelis is on his hands.”
Izadi was notable for heading the Palestine Corps within the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). His work involved managing connections with Palestinian militants, including arming and funding groups like Hamas. Earlier this year, in April, he survived an airstrike aimed at the Iranian consulate in Damascus that killed several Quds Force leaders.
On the same day, another Quds Force commander, Behnam Shahriyari, was reportedly killed in a drone attack while traveling in western Iran. According to the IDF, Shahriyari was responsible for missile transportation to groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
If these reports are confirmed, these strikes could significantly weaken the IRGC’s influence. The conflict between Israel and Iran is now entering its ninth day, with both sides intensifying their military actions. Iran has accused Israel of targeting its nuclear facilities, while Israel claims to be striking military sites in southwestern Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any U.S. involvement would be “very dangerous.” He has also stated that Iran will not resume nuclear negotiations while Israel continues these attacks. Former President Donald Trump has hinted at potential U.S. strikes on Iran, giving Tehran two weeks to negotiate before facing consequences.
As of now, Iranian officials report at least 430 deaths and over 3,500 injuries since the conflict began on June 13. Human rights organizations have reported unofficial death tolls exceeding 650, while in Israel, 25 individuals have died, including one victim of a heart attack.
This ongoing conflict demonstrates deep-seated tensions in the region and highlights the delicate balance of power. Understanding these dynamics is crucial as the situation unfolds.
