The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) reported that Israeli forces boarded multiple vessels, including Alma, Sirius, and Adara, in international waters. They aim to deliver essential supplies to Gaza, where conditions have worsened due to an ongoing blockade.
In their updates, GSF mentioned losing communication with several boats and emphasized their determination to proceed, stating they are still 70 nautical miles from Gaza.
Israel confirmed the interception, indicating that the ships were safely stopped and their passengers would be transferred to an Israeli port. Notably, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was on one of the ships, and Israel assured the public that she and others were safe and healthy.
The Israeli navy had previously warned the flotilla about approaching an active combat zone, asserting that the mission violated a naval blockade. The GSF, however, has steadfastly refused offers from Israel to reroute the aid through other means, insisting on delivering it directly to the intended recipients in Gaza.
Recent developments intensified scrutiny of the flotilla, with over 20 unidentified vessels reported nearby, raising concerns about safety. In response, France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, urged Israel to guarantee the safety of the participants, while Italian officials emphasized the importance of a non-violent approach.
The GSF comprises more than 500 participants from various countries, many of whom joined as the convoy moved from Barcelona, Spain. Their objective is to break Israel’s 18-year maritime blockade and bring food, water, and medicine to Gazan civilians.
Historically, attempts to deliver aid to Gaza by sea have often met with resistance, including previous flotillas that faced military intervention. For instance, in 2010, an Israeli raid on a similar vessel resulted in several fatalities and widespread international outcry.
