Israel’s Economy and Industry Minister, Nir Barkat, recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing situation with Hamas during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He emphasized the need for a leadership change in Gaza, calling for leaders who recognize Israel and seek peace. Barkat mentioned that both Israel and India share a bond shaped by the relationships between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu.
When asked about the possibility of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the return of hostages, Barkat expressed deep concern for those captured by Hamas. He described the terrorists’ brutal actions and stressed the importance of ensuring Hamas does not return to power after the hostage exchange.
“Hamas’s goal is clear: to terrorize Israel,” he said. “If they remain in charge, peace will never be possible.” Barkat highlighted Israel’s ongoing military operations in areas known for Palestinian militancy, like Jenin, asserting that these efforts aim to combat terrorism.
Barkat also addressed the broader context of terrorism, naming Iran and Qatar as significant sources of funding for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He stressed the need to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power while fostering positive relations through initiatives like the Abraham Accords, which aim to normalize ties between Israel and several Arab states.
In terms of Israel’s relationships with its neighbors, Barkat expressed hope for collaboration, citing successful peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan. He believes if neighboring states are willing to recognize Israel and pursue peace, beneficial partnerships can be built.
Turning to the India-Israel relationship, Barkat is enthusiastic about future collaborations. He plans to lead a large delegation of CEOs and entrepreneurs to India soon. He sees immense potential in sectors like technology, health, agriculture, and security. His aim is to strengthen the already robust ties between the two nations.
“The chemistry between Modi and Netanyahu is essential,” he noted, reflecting on India’s support during challenging times. “We are thankful for that friendship.”
Furthermore, Barkat discussed the importance of the economic corridor connecting Israel, India, and Europe via Haifa Port. He assured that Israel is committed to making this corridor a reality, hoping that all involved parties, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan, will collaborate effectively.
Barkat expressed optimism about India’s interest in deepening ties, stating that both countries have much to share in terms of technology and security. He highlighted Israel’s eagerness to assist India in enhancing its defense capabilities and health systems, acknowledging India’s potential as a growing market with a strong focus on development.
As the World Economic Forum in Davos brings together leaders to address key global challenges, India’s participation aims to enhance partnerships and attract investment. With five Union ministers and several chief ministers in attendance, the focus is on positioning India as a leader in sustainable development and innovation.
