Independent University, Bangladesh recently wrapped up a two-day conference titled “Environment and Changing Climate 2025” in Dhaka. The event, organized with the Co-creating Knowledge for Local Adaptation to Climate Change in Least Developed Countries project, emphasized the importance of inclusive climate action.
The conference attracted national and international experts, including researchers, development practitioners, and community leaders. Their discussions centered on “Global Strategies and Local Actions,” underlining the need for community-driven approaches to climate change adaptation.
Day one featured keynote speeches from notable figures like A. Atiq Rahman and Shahpar Selim. They discussed the need for evidence-based research to improve our capacity to tackle climate change. Professor M. Tamim, the vice-chancellor of IUB, was also a key speaker, providing insights on academic initiatives.
The day ended with an alumni roundtable, where IUB graduates shared their experiences in the climate change and development sector. They highlighted the challenges posed by global funding cuts and how these affect local projects.
On day two, the focus shifted to academic presentations. Researchers showcased their findings on various topics, such as climate governance, indigenous knowledge, and sustainable agriculture. Workshops and thematic events further explored ways to support local adaptation.
Notably, leaders from the Salit and Munda communities in Khulna and Satkhira explained their struggles and successes with nature-based solutions. A joint session by CIMMYT, Shushilan, and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development offered practical tools for local adaptation efforts.
These discussions are increasingly relevant. According to a recent UN report, countries must significantly increase their adaptation financing efforts, especially in vulnerable areas. This aligns with a growing trend in social media, where users discuss innovative local solutions to climate challenges.
With climate change affecting communities worldwide, conferences like this one play a vital role in fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge. They remind us that while global strategies are essential, local actions are where real change begins.
