IUP Baseball Faces Tough Loss Against California (Pa.)
The IUP baseball team saw its impressive 10-game winning streak come to an end during a doubleheader against California University of Pennsylvania. With the losses, IUP now stands at 17 wins and 21 losses overall, and 11 wins in conference play.
In the first game, California jumped ahead with three runs. IUP managed to score just once in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Huber doubled to center field and scored on a single by Peyton Johnson. Johnson was the standout hitter of the game, going 3-for-3, while Huber and Teague Hoover also contributed with two and one hits, respectively.
The second game started off better for IUP. Ricardo Aponte led the charge, going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Huber again excelled at the plate, notching three hits and driving in three RBIs. Mitchell Grosch also had a solid performance with two hits and an RBI. The game saw Aponte’s double in the first inning score the Hawks’ first run, giving them an early lead.
The ebb and flow of the match continued as California scored runs in the second and third innings, eventually tying the game at three. IUP briefly led 4-3 after a series of hits, putting them back in contention. However, the Vulcans answered back, scoring three runs in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.
Despite Huber’s impressive solo home run in the seventh, IUP fell short of a comeback.
Looking Ahead
IUP baseball will face California (Pa.) again on the road on April 18. The team’s determination will certainly be tested as they seek to bounce back from these challenging losses.
