IUP Baseball Faces Tough Loss in Home Opener
The IUP baseball team encountered a challenging start to their season. In their home opener against West Liberty, they faced a tough defeat, losing 15-9. The game turned when West Liberty had a nine-run inning that put them well ahead.
IUP began strong. In the first inning, Ricardo Aponte hit a double and advanced to third on a single from Mike Huber. Huber then stole second, and both players scored on a hit from Peyton Johnson, giving IUP an early lead of 3-0. But the tide quickly changed.
In the third inning, West Liberty responded with three doubles, resulting in two runs. They continued to put pressure on IUP, adding two more runs in the fourth and then a staggering nine runs in the fifth inning, which shifted the momentum significantly.
IUP tried to rally in the fifth. Davin Landers and Cayden Bender both singled, and Teague Hoover was hit by a pitch, filling the bases. Ausean Owens scored Landers on a fielder’s choice, but IUP left two runners stranded.
The game wasn’t over yet. Aponte struck again with a double in the sixth, followed by another run scored from Elijah Dunn’s single. In the eighth inning, despite West Liberty adding one more run, IUP fought back, scoring four runs on four hits. Huber, Dunn, Johnson, and Bender crossed the plate, trying to close the gap.
Despite the strong effort in the late innings, the earlier deficits were too great to overcome.
Looking ahead, IUP is set to open PSAC West competition on March 21. They’ll face off against Seton Hill in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
