INDIANA, Pa. — The IUP women’s tennis team faced challenging windy conditions and unexpected illness but ended up with a solid 5-0 win against Shaw in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
Even though Shaw was the No. 7 seed, they pushed IUP hard in several matches. Early on, Shaw took leads, but IUP quickly found their rhythm and took control.
In doubles, Shaw couldn’t field a team at No. 3 doubles, giving IUP a clear path to secure the doubles point with just one win. Hannah Beitat and Asel Calbay rose to the occasion, winning their match 6-1. Ifigeneia Kafka and Annemiek Sterk were also in a strong position with a 4-2 lead when the point was clinched.
The momentum carried into singles play, where IUP won the opening set in all completed matches. Kafka had a smooth 6-4, 6-1 victory. Charliz Tabili fought through a tight first set, winning 7-6, then dominated the second set 6-0.
Lea von Kozierowski delivered the clinching point. She came from behind in the second set of a closely fought match, showcasing her resilience.
IUP moves forward to play the winner of the Charleston and Frostburg State match on Saturday at the Greensburg Racquet Club, with the first serve set for 1 p.m.
Recent statistics highlight the growth of women’s tennis programs. According to the NCAA, women’s participation in college tennis has risen by 18% in the last decade, showcasing the increasing interest and investment in women’s sports. This growth is vital for creating opportunities and inspiring younger athletes.
