Since kicking off on October 1, the food drive at J.R. Vinagro Construction Company in Johnston has been a resounding success. Company President Karen Hilton noted, “It’s really taken off.” This initiative came about because the staff wanted to support the community beyond traditional holiday efforts.
Hilton explained that many think about food drives around the holidays, but the need is pressing throughout the year. “We wanted to start early so we have more time to gather donations,” she said. Employees from all departments, as well as the public, are encouraged to contribute, with the goal of filling their largest truck.
What’s truly inspiring, according to Hilton, is the unity this drive has fostered among the staff. “Everyone, from first and second shifts to the office team, is coming together. It’s amazing!”
There is a growing need for food assistance. Hilton observed that more people are feeling this need today than in the past. “Some things that used to be covered just aren’t anymore,” she added. To help coordinate the event, she tasked employees Danielle Lombardi and Talia Santiago to rally support and manage logistics.
Lombardi shared their first steps. They reached out to the food bank for bins and flyers and contacted local vendors to spread the word. An email to staff prompted an enthusiastic response. “We do a lot to help our community,” Lombardi said. “With everything going on, it’s vital to lend a hand when we can.”
Commonly donated items include pasta, rice, canned vegetables, and baby formula. Hilton also highlighted the importance of donating items that are often overlooked, such as spices, pancake mix, and condiments. “We’re open to anything that can help families put meals on their tables,” she said.
Collection bins are available at their Johnston location on Plainfield Pike and at 7 Starline Way in Cranston. These bins are already overflowing. Hilton expressed, “The sky’s the limit!” Donations are accepted until November 1, with after-hours drop-off options available.
Staff member Anthony Carbone shared his thoughts: “Any chance to give back, especially with the holidays coming, is a wonderful opportunity.” Diana DiBella echoed this sentiment, feeling fortunate to be able to give what she has. “It’s a privilege to be part of a team that cares,” said colleague Josh Blais.
Kelly Seigh, from the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, praised the community’s involvement. “Each month, we serve 89,000 Rhode Islanders in need,” she stated. “This work is only possible because of generous contributions. With the holidays nearing, we encourage everyone to help ensure no one goes hungry.” You can learn more about their efforts at [Rhode Island Community Food Bank](https://www.rifoodbank.org/).
It’s clear that community spirit shines brightest in challenging times, and efforts like J.R. Vinagro’s food drive make a real difference.
