Jack Speidell, a junior captain on the Harvard men’s lacrosse team, has received the first-ever Coach Liam Gleason Humanitarian Award. This new honor recognizes 78 NCAA Division I lacrosse players who show strong leadership and community spirit.
Speidell stands out for his commitment to giving back. He engages with young fans and community members in the Boston area through various initiatives. According to Gerry Byrne, Harvard’s lacrosse coach, “Jack has been a tireless and passionate leader.” His efforts include working with organizations like Team Impact and Harlem Lacrosse, where he connects with children and makes them feel valued, whether he’s signing autographs or visiting children in hospitals.
The Liam Gleason Humanitarian Award was created in January 2026 to honor the legacy of Liam Gleason, the late Siena Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach. It celebrates athletes who exemplify leadership, sportsmanship, and meaningful community involvement. Each NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse program chose one player based on votes from their teammates and coaches.
Liam’s family believes this award will keep his spirit alive. Sue Gleason shared, “Being a light in the world means spreading kindness and positivity.” Simple acts of compassion can inspire others to do the same.
The impact of this award goes beyond recognition. It encourages athletes to be role models and shows how sports can unite communities. In a time when many seek connection and support, initiatives like these are more important than ever.
This award not only honors individual athletes but also aims to create a ripple effect of kindness throughout the sport. By highlighting such positive contributions, the lacrosse community nurtures an environment where everyone can thrive together.
