Jacksonville University has exciting news! They’re commissioning a statue celebrating basketball legend Artis Gilmore, a star player from the ‘70s. This statue will not only honor Gilmore’s contributions but also strengthen the university’s history of philanthropy, especially from the Nimnicht family, who have supported JU for decades.
Gilmore, known as the “A-Train,” was crucial to JU’s success in the 1970 NCAA championship game. His impressive rebound average of 22.7 per game still stands as the best in NCAA Division I history. After his college days, he enjoyed a 17-season career in the ABA and NBA, eventually earning a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
In Gilmore’s words, “Jacksonville University gave me a place to grow and a community that believed in me. I never imagined that a piece of my history would live on here forever.”
Gilmore has kept strong ties to the university over the years, even serving as a special assistant to the president. He has been a powerful ambassador for both the university and the city of Jacksonville.
Jacksonville University President Tim Cost emphasized Gilmore’s impact, stating, “He elevated this university onto the national stage and has been a beloved ambassador for over five decades.” He pointed out that this is only the second permanent statue on campus, the first being Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne, the university’s matriarch.
The Nimnicht family, particularly Lee Nimnicht, a JU alum, has a long history of support for the university. Lee shared, “Artis Gilmore is the reason so many people first heard the name Jacksonville University. We’re proud to honor his legacy.” The family’s name is already prominent around campus, showcasing their commitment to JU through various facilities and scholarships.
The statue will be crafted by Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studio, a recognized artist known for his work with sports figures, including tributes to stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley. His experience in creating lasting memorials means the statue will be a fitting tribute to Gilmore’s legacy.
As the statue takes shape, it will certainly bring joy to not only the university community but also to the wider Jacksonville area, reminding everyone of the incredible history and achievements of Artis Gilmore.
