James Cameron’s Powerful Warning: Why He Finds Donald Trump’s Re-Election ‘Horrifying’

James Cameron is set to become a citizen of New Zealand soon. The filmmaker is looking to escape what he describes as a “horrifying” second term for Donald Trump. In a recent chat with Stuff NZ, Cameron expressed his dismay about Trump’s potential re-election.

“I think it’s horrific,” he stated. “It feels like a step away from everything decent. If America doesn’t stand for its core values, it becomes an empty shell.”

Cameron spends a lot of time in New Zealand working on the Avatar films. He noted that living there helps him distance himself from the daily chaos of American news. “I don’t know if I feel any safer here,” he said, “but I don’t have to see Trump’s face on the front page every day. In New Zealand, it’s almost refreshing.”

Becoming a New Zealand citizen is something Cameron has worked hard for. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “When you move your family somewhere, you need to engage with the community and earn your place.” He appreciates the mutual respect among people in New Zealand, which he believes offers a better environment for his children.

Cameron also shared his passion for helping to rejuvenate New Zealand’s film scene. “I want to bring in fresh talent. It’s not just about directors and writers; it’s also about the skilled crew members. Their work is an art form too.”

Currently, Cameron is in post-production for Avatar: Fire and Ash, set to be released on December 19. Many familiar faces will return, along with newcomers like Oona Chaplin and Michelle Yeoh. This film was filmed back-to-back with The Way of Water, making the wait for fans much shorter than the original Avatar and its sequel, which had a 13-year gap. Plus, Cameron has two more Avatar films already in the works.
