In Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” Christopher Smith, played by John Cena, finds a strange alternate universe. Here, he never accidentally killed his brother, Keith, as a child. In this new world, Chris, Keith, and their father Auggie are superheroes instead of facing a troubled family history. Things seem perfect, especially since Chris’s love interest, Emilia Harcourt, is emotionally stable and loving.
However, many viewers felt something was off about this alternate life. In Episode 6, titled “Ignorance Is Chris,” Harcourt and her friends try to bring Chris back. They become known as the 11th Street Kids. While navigating this new Earth, they stumble upon unexpected and shocking truths.
Once they arrive, the group splits up. Harcourt and Keith go to A.R.G.U.S. headquarters, where she realizes that the town has no people of color. Meanwhile, Adebayo and Economos linger at the Smith family home. As Adebayo wanders, she faces a terrifying realization: she’s being hunted by a mob just for being Black.
At the same moment, Chris discovers something horrifying. At A.R.G.U.S., he sees American flags with a swastika instead of stars. This alternate reality, referred to as “Earth X,” illustrates a world where Nazi Germany triumphed in World War II.
James Gunn, the creator of “Peacemaker,” intentionally kept this twist under wraps, opting not to preview the episode to the press. Interestingly, during private screenings, no viewers connected the dots that the Earth X population lacked diversity.
“Even people of color didn’t notice,” Gunn shared with Variety. Some fans, however, speculated about this twist after Harcourt hinted at the lack of diversity, especially given Auggie’s history as a racist in the main universe.
People online quickly picked up on this discrepancy. Gunn noted, “One person among millions might catch it and share it, and suddenly everyone sees the difference.” Despite this, many were shocked when the twist was revealed.
Gunn has indicated that the real-world events often influence his writing, particularly racial issues that seem echoed in the show. He commented on the timing of the episode’s release, pointing out how life can sometimes mirror art.
Amidst the dramatic twists, the heart of the show remains the relationships between characters. The bond between Chris and Harcourt stands out as they reflect on their feelings for each other during tense moments.

Reflecting on the current state of society, Gunn expressed concern over growing racism, but he remains hopeful. “If my show prompts people to examine their biases, that’s a good thing,” he stated.
