Jannik Sinner Clinches Third Grand Slam Title with Back-to-Back Australian Open Victory Over Alexander Zverev

Jannik Sinner has done it again! The young Italian tennis star has won the Australian Open for the second year in a row. In the 2025 final, he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3. This victory marks Sinner’s third Grand Slam title.

As the world No. 1, Sinner showcased his talent, maintaining control throughout the match. This win adds to his impressive record, which includes titles at the 2024 Australian Open and the US Open. He also reached the semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon last year. Meanwhile, Zverev is still in pursuit of his first Grand Slam title.

With this win, Sinner becomes the first Italian man to secure three Grand Slam titles. He is also the first male player to defend his initial major title since Rafael Nadal in 2006. Zverev, acknowledging Sinner’s skill, simply stated, “You’re just too good,” after the match.

In their previous encounters, Zverev held a lead, winning four out of six matchups. Their last meeting ended with Sinner’s victory in the Cincinnati Open semifinals earlier. The final match started with a tense first set, where Sinner quickly put Zverev on the defensive, closing it out 6-3.

The second set was a rollercoaster. Though Sinner seemed to struggle with his left hamstring, he never let Zverev gain momentum. The set went to a tiebreak, which Sinner won 7-4. Zverev, visibly frustrated, smashed his racquet after facing challenges with it throughout the match. Sinner’s serving was impressive, with an accuracy of 84% on his first serve, playing a key role in his victory.

By the third set, Zverev’s energy appeared to fade. Sinner dominated, and Zverev didn’t manage to break his serve. Sinner now boasts a remarkable 21-match win streak at hardcourt majors, with his only loss in recent times at the hands of Zverev during the 2023 US Open.

Despite 27-year-old Zverev’s numerous accomplishments and 23 career titles, he has yet to claim a Grand Slam. His closest attempt was in 2024 at the French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz. Post-match, Zverev received some tough crowd reactions but remained composed, focusing on the trophy he couldn’t hold.

Afterward, Zverev addressed the heckler’s comments regarding domestic violence accusations, stating that “there haven’t been any in nine months.” He reflected on his journey through the tournament, noting his path to the final included victories over several strong opponents.

In contrast, Sinner’s road to the championship involved battling top seeds, showcasing his resilience and skill. After the match, Sinner posted his excitement on Twitter, expressing gratitude to his team and respect for Zverev, highlighting the sportsmanship they displayed throughout the event.
