Watching: I’m really into reality TV, and this month, I dove into the nail-biting world of “Traitors”. It’s like a real-life game of Cluedo! The cast this season was a mix of surprises—a Welsh accent, a secret priest, and even some competitive sisters. The show was perfect for those long January nights. I can’t wait for the Irish version to see if it lives up to the hype.
Dining: If you haven’t been to Chai-Yo yet, you’re missing out. This Asian restaurant is a festival of flavors and performances. I’ve loved teppanyaki since trying it in Australia, and Chai-Yo brought it to life with entertainment and laughs. The Wagyu dumplings made with Cork wagyu and fresh scallops were unforgettable. If you can, stay for a drink—who knows, you might get serenaded by a staff member! It’s ideal for any celebration or just a fun night out with friends.
Shopping: For unique home decor, check out Kilkenny Architectural Salvage & Antiques. It’s massive—over six acres filled with treasures! I found an eye-catching metallic post box that’s going to elevate my home décor. If you’re into quirky, pre-loved items, this is the place to be, especially if you’re planning some home renovations.
Pottery Painting: Remember how creative we were as kids? When Potteria opened on Douglas Street in Cork, I jumped at the chance to relive that. I painted a mug and realized I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about 11 years! It felt great and surprisingly therapeutic, like I had found a lost part of myself. I highly recommend it as a fun way to reconnect with your artistic side.
Aesthetic Cheeseboards: After seeing so many gorgeous cheeseboards online, I decided to make one. I had a blast shopping for ingredients and arranging them on the board. I even tried to make my cheese look like a flower! It felt good to get creative, even if it didn’t make it to Instagram. Still, I’m determined to share it online this month!
Fitness Journey: January has been a month of reflection for me. After a tough year with a broken ankle, I decided it was time to get back in shape. I joined a free barre class, and it reminded me how much I missed moving. The energy and muscle soreness reminded me of how out of practice I was, but I left feeling revitalized—ready to embrace movement again.
Decorating: Discover delightful prints and postcards at Mc&Ro Artwork. Their nature-inspired designs are charming, especially the fox print. They’d make fantastic gifts or stunning wall art.
Listening and Exploring: I recently wandered around Curragh Woods near Midleton. It’s a beautiful area with many paths to explore. The highlight? Hearing a woodpecker for the first time! While I couldn’t spot it, it’s a memory I won’t forget. Nature always has a way of surprising us.
Dining Again: I tried out the Indian restaurant in Blackrock that I’ve heard so much about. The biryanis were fantastic, with generous portions and a cozy atmosphere. I regret not going sooner—I’ll definitely be back!
New Routes: I found a new greenway, the Midleton-Youghal greenway. It’s flat and easy to walk, making it great for families or anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors. Plus, the fresh air is a nice bonus!
Dining Again: January has been full of delicious meals. I finally went to Elbow Lane for dinner and was blown away by the ribeye steak. It was perfectly cooked and definitely lived up to the hype. I also checked out GoodHood, a new pizza place. The pizzas were amazing, and the vibe was great.
Getting Fit: I’ve been getting more active thanks to a beginner’s running course. It’s been inspiring to run during my lunch breaks. No, I don’t look like a fitness model, but I’m enjoying myself and feeling more alive. Trying out trending classes has pushed me, but the post-exercise high is worth it!
Watching Movies: I caught “We Live in Time” at the cinema, and I think it might be my favorite of the year. It made me laugh, cry, and feel everything in between. It’s definitely a film that will stick with me.
Reading: I struggled with the flu early in January, but audiobooks kept me entertained. Andrew O’Hagan’s “Caledonian Road” was a fantastic escape. I didn’t want it to end!
Outdoor Adventures: I finally hit the outdoors, exploring the 3.2km Dublin Port Greenway. It’s a lovely, newly designed route perfect for biking or walking. I enjoyed seeing my neighborhood from a fresh perspective.
Staying Dry: I bought a windproof umbrella and a trendy RAINS backpack last November. Both have been lifesavers in Dublin’s unpredictable weather. The umbrella has survived countless storms, while the backpack keeps everything dry during downpours.
More Reading: One of my New Year’s resolutions was to read daily. So far, I’ve read six books, and I’m loving every minute. I even got an advanced copy of Róisín Lanigan’s upcoming novel, which has been getting great buzz. I can’t wait to see its release!
Eating Healthy: Acai bowls have become a Sunday favorite. They make me feel a bit closer to summer and are a delicious treat after my morning workouts. Plus, who doesn’t love a little color in their food?
