Tsunami Warnings Lifted After Earthquake in Japan
On December 9, Japan experienced a significant 7.5-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Aomori, resulting in injuries for at least 30 people and prompting evacuations of about 90,000 residents. Initially, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings, predicting waves as high as 3 meters (10 feet). By Tuesday morning, these warnings were lifted, with the JMA downgrading them to advisories.
During this incident, waves between 20 and 70 cm (7 to 27 inches) were recorded at various ports. Fortunately, no major structural damages were reported, and power was restored after the quake caused outages in some areas. The earthquake struck at a depth of 54 km, with its epicenter located approximately 80 km off the coast.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated there was a single fire incident and confirmed that necessary measures were taken to ensure safety, including monitoring nuclear power plants, which reported no irregularities.
