Chilly Weather Hits Jashore
Jashore is feeling the chill as temperatures have plummeted for two days straight, hitting a low of 8.8 degrees Celsius. This cold wave is causing real challenges for both people and animals.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has classified this as a mild cold wave. They categorize temperatures like this: mild (8.1–10 degrees), moderate (6.1–8 degrees), severe (4.1–6 degrees), and very severe (below 4 degrees).
Yet, it’s not just about the numbers. The cold winds and thick fog are making it feel even colder. Many in the community are bundling up in jackets and scarves to stay warm. However, it’s tough for daily wage workers who can’t afford to stay home. Their numbers along the banks of Laldighi have halved recently, as cold weather discourages people from seeking work.
One worker, Sujan Mia, shared, “There has been no work for the past week. Just getting up early doesn’t help.” Another worker, Md Minhaj, remarked, “Staying outside is very difficult in the winter, but I have to come out in search of work.” Even local rickshaw puller Hanef Ali reported a drop in passengers, which has hit his income hard.
This cold spell has also seen a rise in winter-related illnesses like fevers and coughs. Doctors are recommending that locals drink hot water, wear warm clothes, and take care of their health during this chilly season.
It’s clear that this winter’s grip is tough. As we face this cold snap, it’s a poignant reminder of how weather can deeply affect our lives, livelihoods, and health.
