Jennifer Lopez has always had a special connection with musicals. Recently, she shared her journey at the Sundance Film Festival while promoting her new film, “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” It was a significant moment for her.
In a video from the festival, Lopez, along with director Bill Condon and co-star Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, participated in a Q&A session after the screening. They were met with two standing ovations. With tears in her eyes, Lopez expressed her lifelong dream, saying, “I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life.”
Lopez revealed that her love for musicals started in childhood. Her mother would have her watch “West Side Story” on Thanksgiving. She felt mesmerized by the film and knew that she wanted to be part of that world. “That was always my goal,” she said, and now, she finally achieved it.
The movie is based on a novel by Manuel Puig, published in 1976. It was adapted into a film in 1985 and later became a Broadway musical in 1993. The story follows a political prisoner in Argentina, played by Diego Luna, who shares his cell with a queer window dresser, played by Elizarraraz. Their conversations revolve around a Hollywood musical featuring a talented actress, played by Lopez.
During the screening, Condon spoke about the relevance of their film in today’s world, especially in light of recent political decisions regarding gender. He pointed out the film’s theme of overcoming differences: “One of the things the movie is about is the attempt to bridge the incredible, difficult differences that separate us so often.”
This comment drew mixed reactions from the audience. Condon then emphasized that the film promotes kindness and love as a means to connect with one another.
As of now, the release date for “Kiss of the Spider Woman” has not been announced.
