Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, recently admitted to making a gesture during the Cowboys’ game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Following the game, news surfaced that the NFL plans to fine him $250,000 for the middle finger he displayed, which he called an “accidental” mistake. Jones intends to appeal the fine.
The incident happened during the Cowboys’ 37-22 victory over the Jets. As Jones waved to fans from his luxury box, he also unintentionally shared a middle finger. Video footage of the moment quickly circulated on social media, with former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant sharing it as well.
When questioned about the gesture, Jones explained that he meant to give a thumbs-up instead. He stated that he was simply caught up in the excited atmosphere created by Cowboys fans, clarifying that no animosity was intended. “That was inadvertent on my part,” he said during his weekly radio interview.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for an inappropriate gesture. In 2009, Bud Adams, former owner of the Tennessee Titans, faced the same $250,000 fine for similar behavior during a game. Adams acknowledged the inappropriateness of his actions and apologized shortly after.
NFL owners are held to high standards, as their actions reflect on the league. According to a recent survey by the Sports Business Journal, 78% of fans believe owners should maintain a positive image. Incidents like Jones’s can impact fan perception and raise questions about professionalism in sports leadership.
The NFL has a history of imposing fines on players and personnel for conduct deemed inappropriate. This fine may serve as a reminder that even the highest-ranking officials in the league need to maintain decorum, especially in the public eye.
As the appeal unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the league handles this incident and what it means for Jones and the Cowboys moving forward.
