New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn recently made a significant quarterback change after the team’s loss to the New England Patriots. Justin Fields is being benched in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor before their next matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
Fields’ performance has been a concern. Over the last five games, he failed to throw for more than 120 yards in four of those games. In three games, he struggled especially, passing for under 55 yards. In a tough loss to the Patriots, one of his throws even deflected off an offensive lineman’s helmet and landed incomplete. As a result, the Jets currently hold the worst passing offense in the NFL. They rank last in passing yards per game (139.9), 26th in passing touchdowns (11), and 24th in completion percentage (62.5).
Interestingly, Fields was almost benched earlier this season, but an injury to Taylor kept him on the field. In a surprising turn, Fields had one of his better games against the Cincinnati Bengals, which momentarily secured his starting role. However, after reviewing the film from the Patriots game, Glenn’s stance shifted.
“We need to improve our passing game,” Glenn stated. He recognized Fields had some moments but noted unmet opportunities—open receivers that went unnoticed. This mixed review was a clear signal that change was needed.
Now, the focus shifts to Tyrod Taylor. The 36-year-old veteran offers experience and is respected by teammates. In a previous game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he completed 26 out of 36 passes for 197 yards, demonstrating he still has the skills to contribute effectively.
The next question for the Jets is what happens to Fields. Will he become the second-string quarterback or even drop to third? A similar situation unfolded in 2022 when Zach Wilson was benched and moved to third string. This arrangement allowed him to practice without the pressure of playing, giving him a chance to grow.
Fields is under contract for next season with $10 million guaranteed, so how the Jets handle him this season is crucial. They might also want to evaluate undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who’s currently on the practice squad. While he might not be a long-term answer, getting some game experience could be valuable if the Jets find themselves in a pinch.
