Jets Part Ways with Xavier Gipson Following Crucial Fumble in Season Opener Against Steelers

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Xavier Gipson is looking for a new team after a costly fumble led to his release from the New York Jets. Coach Aaron Glenn confirmed the move, emphasizing that it wasn’t just about that one mistake. “Decisions are not made rashly,” he stated. “Xavier is a good player, and he will find a spot in this league.”

Gipson was trying to fill in for injured Kene Nwangwu when he fumbled during a pivotal moment in the Jets’ 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This misstep allowed Pittsburgh to score quickly, turning the game’s momentum. Coach Glenn has been vocal about turnovers, making it clear that players who repeatedly cause issues won’t stay on the team. Gipson’s fumble marked his first of the game, but he had a total of 10 fumbles in his 35 games with the Jets.

Glenn wants the best players in the lineup, and he believes a change was necessary. He stressed that accountability is key for the team, though he wouldn’t pin the decision solely on Gipson’s fumble. The coach mentioned that multiple factors contributed to their choice.

With Nwangwu still under evaluation for his hamstring injury, the Jets have several options for returning kicks. They recently added Isaiah Williams from Cincinnati’s practice squad, and others in the mix include rookie Arian Smith and Jamaal Pritchett.

Gipson was initially an undrafted free agent who made an impact in his rookie season, with notable plays such as a 65-yard punt return touchdown against Buffalo. In his time with the Jets, he recorded 27 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his talent despite the setback.

Injuries are also affecting the team, with rookie tight end Mason Taylor missing practice due to an ankle issue. Taylor, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, previously dealt with a high ankle sprain in training camp.
